Unit Elections & Camp Promotions

How Scouts are elected to the OA and how camp promotions work

Unit Elections

Unit elections are the primary method by which Scouts are selected for membership in the Order of the Arrow. Elections are conducted by trained election teams from the lodge, visiting your unit meeting.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America
  • Hold First Class rank or higher
  • Have experienced 15 nights of camping (including one long-term camp of at least 5 nights)
  • Have the approval of the unit leader

How to Schedule an Election

Contact your chapter chief or the lodge to schedule a unit election. Elections are typically conducted between August and December each year. Your unit should have at least 50% of eligible members present.

Camp Promotions

During summer camp, OA representatives visit each campsite to promote the Order of the Arrow and encourage elected candidates to complete their Ordeal. Camp promotions are a great way to share the OA experience with Scouts who may not be familiar with it.
